Great information! We are planning to build a garage apartment for my parents so they can come live with us...but not in the same house. The only thing holding me back is what I will do with this space if they don't like it here or one day have to live in a nursing home or an assisted care facility instead. Of course I want the garage part, but I don't need a bathroom, bedroom and living room upstairs. But you make a great point about renting it out. There are plenty of people who might prefer a garage apartment over a busy apartment building. I also like the idea of using it as an entertainment space...hadn't thought of that. My wife would love for me and my friends to play pool or watch the football game in the garage apartment instead of in the basement. That we wouldn't be keeping her up all night. And we'd have our own frige!
